About

Clinical Psychologist Elif Nur Sular completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at İstanbul Bilgi University and her master's degree in Clinical Psychology at Nişantaşı University. In her master's thesis she studied intolerance of uncertainty and cognitive flexibility in individuals with a narcissistic personality pattern, and examined the effectiveness of a psychoeducation programme based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. She works in individual psychotherapy and psychological assessment, and structures her clinical practice in line with current scientific literature and evidence-based approaches.

In her clinical work she draws on Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and EMDR. She has trained in Schema Therapy within the ISST framework and has completed basic training and supervision in EMDR. In psychological assessment she uses standardised instruments such as the MMPI – personality assessment and psychopathology inventory – and the MOXO attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity test. Her main areas of work include anxiety disorders, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress, relationship difficulties, attachment patterns, self-esteem and self-worth, eating-related psychological difficulties and personality patterns.

Rather than addressing a person's psychological difficulties only at the level of present symptoms, her clinical approach considers early life experiences, unmet core emotional needs, cognitive and behavioural patterns and interpersonal dynamics as interrelated. She structures psychotherapy around the client's reason for seeking help, clinical needs and therapeutic goals, as an individual and collaborative process aimed at understanding current difficulties, addressing the patterns that maintain them and developing more functional ways of coping.

Clinical Psychologist Elif Nur Sular sees clients and carries out her professional work at Acıbadem International Hospital – Yeşilköy.

Clinical Areas

Areas of Expertise

Anxiety Disorders

The effects of anxiety on thoughts, emotions and the body — intense worry, panic symptoms, avoidance and intolerance of uncertainty — are assessed as a whole. Therapy works on the mental patterns that trigger and maintain anxiety, helping the person regain everyday functioning and psychological flexibility.

Depression

Low mood, loss of motivation, pessimism, chronic fatigue and feelings of worthlessness are addressed within a clinical framework. The aim is not only to ease symptoms but to change the negative beliefs, unhelpful behaviours and interpersonal dynamics that feed depression.

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress

The traces that difficult and traumatic experiences leave on a person's capacity to regulate emotions, on relationships and on mental processes are explored. Symptoms such as flashbacks, avoidance and hyperarousal are processed in a safe setting with EMDR and current trauma-focused therapeutic approaches.

Relationship Difficulties

Breakdowns in communication, chronic conflict, trust problems, boundary violations and recurring relationship cycles are addressed. In couple or individual work, the unmet emotional needs, expectations and unconstructive ways of communicating beneath the relationship are recognised, with the aim of a healthier relationship dynamic.

Attachment Patterns

The ways a person forms relationships are assessed in terms of closeness, trust and fears of abandonment and rejection. By exploring how early childhood experiences and bonds with caregivers are reflected in adult relationships, more secure and balanced relationship patterns are developed.

Eating-Related Psychological Difficulties

Emotional processes expressed through body image, a focus on weight, a need for control and eating behaviour are addressed as a whole. The work focuses on the emotional gaps, rigid cognitive schemas and coping mechanisms that lie beneath eating behaviour.

Addiction and Impulse Control

Difficulty with control and impulsivity in substance use or behavioural addictions (gambling, screens and others) is assessed. A relapse-prevention therapy plan is carried out, focusing on the psychological needs, gaps in emotion regulation and triggers that maintain the addiction.

Self-Esteem and Self-Worth

Difficulties with self-worth — feelings of inadequacy, harsh self-criticism, seeking approval and oversensitivity to criticism — are addressed. By working on the schemas behind a negative self-image, self-compassion, a sense of competence and inner self-esteem are supported.

Personality Patterns

Rigid, persistent patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving in how a person sees themselves, others and the world are explored. Lifelong recurring interpersonal difficulties and relationship crises are addressed in depth within Schema Therapy and CBT, building more flexible ways of coping.

Psychological Assessment and Tests

MMPI

In clinical assessment it provides comprehensive, objective data on a person's defence mechanisms, ways of regulating emotion, personality dynamics and psychological functioning, supporting treatment planning.

MOXO

Attention, Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Test

A computer-based standardised test that objectively measures attention, timing, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

What it adds to assessment

Its simulation includes environmental distractors, giving measurable results on a person's capacity to focus and control impulses. Combined with clinical interviews and a detailed life history, it gives the assessment an objective basis.

Principles and Approach

Psychological assessment

Psychological tests and inventories are not diagnostic tools on their own; they are qualified measures that support the clinical interview, a detailed history and observation.

Choosing a test

The choice of test and assessment method is made individually, in line with ethical principles, according to the person's reason for seeking help, clinical needs and therapeutic goals.

On recurring relational schemas, attachment patterns and how past experiences are reflected in adult relationships.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I have been living the same emotional cycles and relationship problems for years. Can psychotherapy really change them?

Yes. Many people take the reactions or relationship choices that wear them down to be a "personality trait". Yet these recurring cycles are the result of schemas that developed in childhood and adolescence, maladaptive coping mechanisms and unprocessed emotional experiences. Psychotherapy does not only soothe surface symptoms; it goes to the roots of these deep patterns so the mind can develop new, functional ways. The process begins with awareness and becomes lasting change through structured interventions.

What if I find it hard to talk, to feel or to express myself?

This is one of the most natural concerns for someone starting therapy for the first time. Psychotherapy is not a performance in which you must express yourself perfectly from the start. The therapy room is a place where you are completely safe, even when you cannot find the words, avoid your feelings or struggle to speak. The process moves at the pace you are ready for, building a safe ground step by step.

Why should I see a psychologist when I can talk to family or friends?

Talking to people close to you can bring emotional relief, but it does not replace psychotherapy. Friendships are by nature partial, involve advice and at times carry bias or expectations. Psychotherapy is an evidence-based process carried out within neutral, professional and ethical boundaries. The aim is not to tell you what to do or to give advice, but to help you look at events in an objective mirror and gain the mental strength to find your own solutions.

What if I am afraid of what I will discover about myself once therapy starts?

Psychotherapy is not an uncontrolled process that suddenly pulls you into depths you are not ready for. Sessions move at the pace your mental and emotional capacity allows. The aim is not to confront you with difficult truths and leave you alone with them, but to help you build the emotional flexibility and coping skills to engage with them within a safe frame.

Is going to therapy a sign of weakness? Is it normal that I cannot solve my problems on my own?

On the contrary, starting psychotherapy is a sign of strong self-awareness and courage, not weakness. Just as you would see a specialist for a physical illness, getting professional support for emotional and mental difficulties is a natural and healthy step. The patterns you struggle to resolve alone call for expert guidance not because you are inadequate, but because they rest on deeper processes that have not been worked through.

Can talking about the past really change my life today?

The human mind tends to keep unfinished, unprocessed past experiences alive "as if they were happening now". The aim of talking about the past is not nostalgia or staying stuck there. It is to recognise which past experience the anger, anxiety, sense of worthlessness or relationship crises you live today are an extension of. An emotion whose roots are understood and reprocessed loses its power to steer your decisions and your future.

Do I need an obvious crisis or a diagnosis to start psychotherapy?

No. You do not need a clinical diagnosis or for your life to be turned upside down to seek psychotherapy. Wanting to know yourself better, finding it hard to set boundaries, feeling stuck in decisions or simply wanting to improve your quality of life and emotional awareness are all entirely valid and worthwhile reasons to start.

How will I know which approach — Schema Therapy, EMDR or CBT — is right for me?

Working out which therapy method a client needs is the specialist's responsibility. In the first assessment sessions your reason for seeking help, your personal characteristics and your needs are considered as a whole. The most suitable framework is chosen from evidence-based approaches such as Schema Therapy, EMDR and CBT, and the process is shared with you openly.

Does therapy create dependence? Will I have to be in therapy for the rest of my life?

The core goal of psychotherapy is not to make the client dependent on the therapist but, on the contrary, to help the client become their own "inner therapist". Throughout therapy you gain the skills to regulate your emotions, recognise your schemas and cope with crises. The aim is to build an autonomous person who can stand on their own feet and steer their own life freely.

Does what is said in the therapy room really stay completely confidential?

Yes. All sessions are subject to strict confidentiality under the Code of Ethics of the Turkish Psychological Association (TPD) and the relevant legal regulations. Nothing discussed in the therapy room — no information, feeling or detail — is shared with any third party or institution (including family) without the client's explicit consent. The only exception is a situation of life-threatening danger to the client or to someone else.

I am afraid my feelings will get worse or that I will lose control during therapy. Is that normal?

Yes, this is an entirely natural hesitation. Making contact for the first time with feelings that have been suppressed or avoided for years can bring a temporary sensitivity at first. But psychotherapy is not an uncontrolled process in which you drown in your emotions. The first and most important step of the clinical work is to establish mental and physical safety (stabilisation) and to help you build resilience and emotion-regulation skills before working with emotional loads. The process is safe, moves step by step and you always remain in control.
